You Take My Breath Away

There is something about Queen’s "You Take My Breath Away" that reaches somewhere deep inside me.

The lyrics have always touched me in a way that is difficult to explain. They hit something within me, something I can relate to perhaps a little too deeply.

Because sometimes, there are feelings we don't choose.

There may be people who make us feel the things these lyrics describe. People who awaken something inside us, whether we wanted them to or not. And perhaps that is one of the strangest things about being human... we don't always get to decide what someone makes us feel.

We can try to reason with our hearts. 

We can tell ourselves what we should feel, what would be easier, what would make more sense. We can fight it, ignore it, bury it, or pretend it isn't there.

But we can't always control the feeling itself.

And we certainly can't control what music does to us.

Sometimes a song doesn't create something inside your heart. Sometimes it simply finds something that was already there, and gives it a voice.

That is what "You Take My Breath Away" does for me.

I love this song very much. Not because I necessarily want to relate to every word. Not because I chose for the lyrics to mean so much to me.

But because they do.

Because somewhere between those words and that melody, there is something I recognize. Something that feels painfully familiar.

And maybe that's why certain songs become so precious to us.

Not because they tell the story we wished we had. They say what we are not able to speak ourselves... What we feel. Music is what feelings sounds like, someone once said. 

But because, somehow, they tell a part of the story we already carry inside us.

Sometimes music doesn't ask permission before it touches your heart.

It simply finds the place where you are most vulnerable…

…and sings directly to it.
